Mountainbike Event "Kitzalp" in Kirchberg-Kitzbuehel/
Tyrol / Austria
Good results in two races

Two training competitions on one weekend were tough. However, I did quite well.

The "Kitzalp" mountain bike races (Marathon and Cross County) always have a great field. Many strong German are always there. My last race in Kirchberg - Kitzbuehel as a junior was two years ago before I started with triathlon.

The courses were a little bit extended. Mountain bike competitions in Tyrol are always selective and a great challenge for riding skills and power.

Saturday, 06.26. - Mountain Bike Marathon
I chose the middle distance - 45 km with 2000 meters vertical. The partly muddy track went partly over the Hahnenkamm World Cup downhill slope.
After 2 hours 33 minutes I finished as 9th. I am satisfied with my race because it was a training competition for me.

Sunday, 06.27. - XCO (MTB Cross County)
After five laps I finished with a time of 1 hr 21 min on rank 2 in my class. The last lap I was able to go faster but to win I was too far behind.

In conclusion of this successful weekend I completed with another swimming training session at Schwarzsee / Kitzbuehel.

My stay in Tyrol ended in front of a big TV screen in Kitzbuehel in a beer garden watching the soccer World Cup matches midst German and English fans - hooligans.

My next Competitions:
07/11/2010  XTERRA France
07/18/2010  Großglockner run

"Raxkönig" - Extreme Duathlon - Kapellen near Muerzzuschlag / Styria / Austria - Win in Class 1 (20-30)

As preparation for my next international XTERRA triathlons, I have chosen this competition as training.

The external conditions were relatively unfavorable. The finish was at the Karl-Ludwig house on top of Rax (highest peak in Lower Austria) at 1804 m above sea level. The temperature there was 0 degrees Celsius with 100% humidity.

Start was very early at 8.00 am in Kapellen near Muerzzuschlag. After 3 km running and 10 km on the road bike up to Preiner Gscheid I only had the Hungarian Zisko Balzas behind me. Rest of the field was far behind. The last three kilometers running started with steep mountain running. What came next was more climbing than running. Partly with my hands over and rocks I got to the finish. These 3 km "run" had
800 m vertical. The Hungarian Zisko Balzas was in "Run-Walk-Climbing" the best and got fist at "Raxkoenig 2010". My Fun Sports Tri team mate Gilbert Grabner got 2nd. With my 3rd place overall and 1st place as the youngest in the class of 20-30 year olds I'm quite satisfied.

A further training competition is the Kitzalp Bike-Marathon in Kitzbuehel / Tyrol / Austria June 26th before going to France for XTERRA.

XTERRA EC - Orosei / Sardinia / Italy

This XTERRA race was my 2nd start in the Pro category. All the Top XTERRA athletes participated at this European Championships. Only a few triathletes were missing, for example South African former world champion Conrad Stoltz.

The mountain bike course and the running course as well were really tough. 1,5 km open water swim in the Mediterranean Sea was the easiest part of the race. The sea was clear and calm but a bit chilly. That meant it would be a wet suit race. During the week the surf was really high and a swim was almost impossible. Race day's weather was perfect, 27° C and very sunny.

My goal, a top ten result were absolutely out of reach this day, although I was well prepared. My swim was very solid again because of my much better technique which I learned during training in Australia. Unfortunately I lost my timing chip during the swim that means no split times. However I'm still in the overall ranking. Some technical problems on my mountainbike were the reason why I couldn't show my strength in this XTERRA race.

In the men's and the women's race were won by the favorites:
Franky Batiler / France and Melanie McQuaid / Canada

My next Competitions:
07/11/2010  XTERRA France - Xonrupt - Gerardmer / France
07/18/2010  Großglockner Run - Heiligenblut / Carinthia / Austria

Skiing in Snowbird Utah - USA

Last week - during the XTERRA race in Las Vegas - temperatures were up to 32 C.

Immediately after the race in the sunny Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort we drove to Salt Lake City / Utah where I'll spend my next weeks in US. Without any saying I'll continue me intensive triathlon training program there. I know this region very well because I spent more than two month in this region last summer.

Mid of the week a tremendous change in the weather pattern happened. 3 inch fresh snow and frozen temperature in Salt Lake City and 3 foot fresh snow in the Rockies in one night was the result. Skiing with friends in this beautiful fresh powder was a great alternation to my daily triathlon program. It was rather difficult to keep up with my friend Carston Oliver who is one of the best free skiers. He took part in the world championship a couple of weeks ago and was rather successful. As I know the Snowbird ski resort very well I did not get lost although I skied there three years ago the last time.

I skipped the Provo / Utah half marathon because I let my winter running outfit at home in Austria.

My next events:
30/05/2010  XTERRA European Championship - Italy / Sardinia
06/26/2010  XTERRA Czech Republic / Spindleruv Mlyn
(I haven't found any sponsors for XTERRA Malaysia 06/13/2010, yet.)

XTERRA Las Vegas - USA

This was my first XTERRA race in 2010. Since the Las Vegas event was part of the American tour and US West Championship a lot of international world class triathletes took part as there was an
US$ 10.500 purse.

Beginning of 2010 I decided to change over from an „age-grouper” to the professional category knowing it would be very hard the first years. My season preparation was accordingly to my determination. One question was how effective my intensive training in Australia was. The second question was how I could manage an 18 hours jet lag (Australia - Austria - US western time) within eight days.

In Las Vegas there was the very best weather with summer temperature of 32 C / 90 F, dry and desert environment. The event took place in the classy Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort. As I took part in many different XTERRA events so far, it always is a pleasure to meet the top athletes. About 300 triathletes were on the start in Las Vegas.

My intensive swimming training was rather positive. I was much faster than last year and not that exhausted. The mountainbike section was very selective. Even the best had to carry and push the bike over the boulders several miles. The running part led through stony and deserts trails. I gave all but was not exhausted as I was in the past.

Under such conditions the multiple XTERRA world champion Conrad Stoltz from South Africa was unbeatable. I failed with my goal to get a top-ten ranking in my first XTERRA race as a pro. It only achieved rank 11 - without any prize money.

After the Las Vegas event my mum and I drove to Lake Mead (border Arizona - Nevada) and to St. George (Utah) before we arrived in Salt Lake City the next day. Since there is still snow in the mountains I'll take the opportunity to ski in the great powder of the Rockies. Pictures and a report of my winter activities will be available soon.

My next events:
30/05/2010  XTERRA European Championship - Italy / Sardinia
06/26/2010  XTERRA Czech Republic / Spindleruv Mlyn
(I haven't found any sponsors for XTERRA Malaysia 06/13/2010, yet.)
